  Twenty-Four Years Later…

  “That smells so damn good, baby,” I murmur against her ear. “and so do you,” he continues, sliding his nose up and down my neck. A moan escapes my lips.

  “Dad,” Jason, our youngest complains.

  “You don’t like me showing your mom the affection she deserves then leave the room,” I tell him, with my arms around Tracy’s waist.

  In comes Frank, our oldest, who has just come back from another tour of duty. “Bro, when are you going to learn that they’re never going to stop.”

  “Tell me about it, but damn, I’m about to eat.”

  “It’s okay, more for me.” Tracy hands me a plate. This is my second favorite breakfast. My first has been limited to our bedroom while the kids are home on vacation.

  “Drop it, Jason,” Ellen, my second oldest came into the kitchen. Krista came into the kitchen after her. We had four kids and they were all over eighteen now.

  “We have three more weeks of vacation. I want to have a barbeque before you all leave,” I tell them. We’re in Texas after all; barbeques are a must.

  “Then we have about two weeks. I’ve got to report back. I don’t know for how long at the moment, but I’m not going to be back before they go back,” Frank adds.

  “I say this weekend would be perfect,” Ellen remarks, giving her mother a suspicious look. I know that it’s better to stay out of it. At twenty-one, I don’t want to picture my daughter anything but the little girl who used to sit on my lap and thought I was the best daddy in the world.
