  Then we heard the door. “Shit, I hope no one heard you come. I’d have to kick them all out.”

  “Devlin, Selene? Everything okay?” It was my mother-in-law.

  “Yes, we’ll be out shortly,” Devlin answered.

  “Okay. Just wanted to check on Selene,” she said before walking away from the bedroom door.

  “Let’s get cleaned up and out to the party. We’ll kick them out soon because I’m not done with you, my lovely wife.”

  Three hours later, he kept his promise.

  Epilogue

  Three Years Later…

  Devlin

  I opened the door to our bedroom and saw my beautiful wife, holding our newest addition to the family with my oldest resting on the pillow next to her.

  “Wow, isn’t that a perfect sight.” I walked deeper into the room and climbed stealthily on the bed to take Devlin the third to bed. It was late, and I’d just returned from my business trip to Indiana. I hated having to leave my little family, but I had to do it.

  We moved from the condo two years ago to a house in the western suburbs of Chicago. It was a nice quiet area and I relocated the company to Naperville so I could be close to my family at all times. My parents bought a small house down the street from us. They came over to see the kids almost every day. It helped when I had to go out of town. I had to spend the night away from my lovely Selene and I panicked the entire time.

  After all that happened when we first met, I was forever paranoid that something would go wrong. Two years into his sentence, Ken messed with the wrong criminals in prison and was killed. I still didn’t know what happened, but I was forever grateful the piece of shit was no longer going to haunt us.

  It wasn’t the same for the dumb bitch. She was found guilty and given a three-year sentence, but got out early for good behavior last year. It was total bullshit, but her family was rich and pulled the necessary strings. Three months after she was out she lost it again, attacking a pregnant woman in a fit of jealousy, and was put in a mental hospital. She’s going to be in there for a minimum of ten years and wouldn’t be let out early this time.

  “Welcome home,” she whispered, feeding our sweet little Penelope.

  “Thank you, babe. I’m going to tuck him in, then I’ll be back.” I leaned over and kissed her. It was supposed to be brief, but I couldn’t stop myself. It deepened and hardened. I wanted her, right here and now. Seeing her being motherly only turned me on more. Having gone a whole day without seeing her face had been more than I could handle.

  I pulled away when my Penny started to fuss because I was messing with her meal. I winked then picked up Dev. “Daddy, I missed you,” he whispered, tucking his head against my chest.

  “I missed you, too, little man.” The drugs and danger to Selene hadn’t caused any serious damage to him. We were grateful that he was healthy and brilliant. It didn’t hurt that Selene had been a kindergarten teacher. Little man was going to start school knowing more than a first grader. At almost two and a half, he could count to ten and read his full name. She was the perfect mom and an even better wife.

  “Daddy, tomorrow play,” he muttered sleepily after I laid him down in his bed.

  “Yes, Devlin.” I tucked him in and kissed his head. I stared down at him thinking about how lucky I was. Now it was time to put the baby to sleep.

  I heard Selene singing to Penny in her nursery. I walked in and slid my arms around her waist. “Thank you, Selene.”

  “For what?” she asked, leaning back against my chest.

  “For everything. The day I met you my life changed.”

  “I know, I nearly got you killed.”

  “Yes, but what’s life like if your woman doesn’t try to send you into an early grave,” I joked, kissing the top of her head.

  “Yes, well I tried to warn you, but you refused to give up.”

  “I’m never letting you go, Mrs. Jacobs. Now come to bed. As much as I want to be inside you, I’ve had the longest day.” I pulled away and took her hand. We climbed into bed, spooning, her back to my chest.

  Five years later…

  Selene

  It was Devlin’s birthday and I had another special gift for him. I had kept it a secret, but couldn’t hide it anymore.

  “Ah,” I cried out, my dress and the floor below me were suddenly soaked. The pain came hard this time. Devlin who had been adjusting his tie in the mirror stopped, frozen for a minute. The moment I keeled over in pain, he jumped into action. Before I could do anything, he had me cradled in his arms, carrying me down our stairs and calling for his parents.

  They were here to babysit for his birthday dinner, so that was a bonus. I panted out harshly. “Put me down. I can walk.”

  “No, you won’t. I don’t need my baby falling out in your next step.”

  “Mom, she’s having the baby. We’ve got to go.”

  “Be careful. Call us as soon as you have this little one. Happy birthday, son.”

  I screamed out. Gosh, I didn’t remember the previous labors feeling like this. How did I forget how this felt?

  “I’m sorry, babe. I’ll get you there.” He held on to me tightly. By the time we got to the hospital, I felt like if I stood our son was going to fall out. The hospital rolled me into delivery when they saw him crown. Wow, he was coming fast.

  “See that’s what I was talking about. He would’ve fallen out.” I growled at him. This wasn’t anything like falling. It was more that he was hanging to my tubes for dear life. Little Derek Jacobs was born twenty minutes later.

  We had three small ones in a very short time, but they were perfect. I don’t know how many more we’d have, but knowing my beast, it’d be at least three more. He loved getting me pregnant.

  “With the next one, could you give me a little more notice?”

  “Sorry, I wanted to surprise you.”

  “I told you, woman. You’re trying to kill me,” he complained, grabbing his chest like he was having a heart attack. What an ass, but he was mine and I’d be forever grateful he didn’t take get lost for an answer.
